Caustic Soda

Sodium Hydroxide

Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye and caustic soda, an inorganic compound with the formula NaOH. It is a white solid ionic compound consisting of sodium cations and hydroxide anions. It is highly soluble in water or readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air.

Sodium hydroxide is used in the manufacture of sodium salts and detergents and is valued for pH regulation and organic synthesis. In bulk, sodium hydroxide is commonly handled as an aqueous solution, since solutions are cheaper and easier to handle. Around 56% of sodium hydroxide produced is used by industry. 25% of industrial use involves the paper industry.

Common Uses

  • Artificial Textile Fibers (such as rayon)
  • Detergents
  • Drain Cleaners
  • Dyes and Bleaches
  • Paper
  • Soaps (including Bar Soap)
  • Sodium Salts
  • Bagels and Pretzel Dough
  • De-greasing metals
  • pH regulation (increasing alkalinity)
  • Oil Refining
  • Organic Synthesis
  • Petroleum Drilling
  • Purifying Bauxite Ore
  • Water Treatment

Safety

Like other corrosive acids and alkalis, a few drops of sodium hydroxide solution can readily decompose proteins and lipids in living tissues via amide and ester hydrolysis, which consequently causes chemical burns. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet or contact your Product Manager for more information.
